The CSCS Mission is to promote and represent the specialty of cardiac surgery including but not exclusive to research, education, and sound clinical practice.
The CSCS strives to be responsive to its members’ needs. In addition to the educational activities it sponsors and develops, it has partnered to assess workforce issues hoping to project surgeon shortages in the future to help plan for our specialty’s growth. We are playing a role in the development of training programs to help the field adapt to new technologies and embrace new techniques.
Academic Cardiac Surgeon
The New Brunswick Heart Centre (NBHC) and the Department of Surgery, affiliated with Dalhousie University New Brunswick Medical School, is seeking a dynamic and motivated individual for the Position of Academic Cardiac Surgeon in the Division of Cardiac Surgery.
The NBHC is located at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. The NBHC is the sole tertiary cardiac care program in the province of New Brunswick. It has an annual cardiac surgery volume of nearly 900 cases spanning the full spectrum of cardiac surgery. We have a particularly well established minimally invasive mitral program and complex aortic surgery program including endovascular approaches. There is an active multidisciplinary Transcatheter Aortic Valve (TAVI) program, Mitra Clip program, Lead Extraction program and a growing clinical trials and cardiovascular epidemiology research program.
The NBHC operates within Horizon Health Network, the largest health-care organization in Atlantic Canada. With 1000 physicians, an annual budget exceeding $1 billion and approximately 13,000 employees, Horizon Health Network's strategic vision focuses on research, innovation and education. The successful candidate will join 5 other cardiac surgeons, supported by 5 dedicated Nurse Associates. The projected start time for the position would be the summer of 2019.
Finally, a subspecialty interest is strongly encouraged, especially among the fields of TAVI, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Heart Failure Surgery, Aortic Surgery and/or Arrhythmia Surgery. Proficiency in both official languages is an asset. Remuneration is via an Alternate Funding Plan, paid by the New Brunswick Department of Health. Opportunities exist for academic cross appointment at both Dalhousie University and Memorial University. The Division of Cardiac Surgery is an integral part of the Department of Surgery. Division members have excellent opportunities for educational and research endeavors in addition to their clinical responsibilities. Candidates must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick, privileges with Horizon Health Network and membership with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as well as adequate liability insurance.

Academic Pediatric Congenital Cardiac Surgeon
The Division of Cardiac Surgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta, is accepting applications for the position of a Fee for Service Pediatric & Adult Congenital Cardiac Surgeon with a Clinical Faculty Appointment. The Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Alberta has one of the largest Pediatric Congenital programs in Canada.
The Division of Cardiac Surgery presently consists of 11 cardiac surgeons and performs the full range of pediatric and adult cardiac operations averaging 1900 cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) cases per year. Additionally, 400-500 non CPB cases are performed. The Division is a major transplantation centre for Western Canada performing approximately 100 heart and lung transplantations annually. The Division is located in the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute which combines state of the art clinical facilities with outstanding opportunities in both clinical and basic science research. The Pediatric & Adult Congenital program performs approximately 600 cases per year.
The Division is recruiting a Pediatric & Adult congenital surgeon to start July 1, 2018 (this date is flexible). The successful applicant will have a job description which includes a significant commitment to Academic Cardiac Surgery with the clinical component to include a full range of Pediatric and Adult Congenital Cardiac Surgery, heart transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support. The successful applicant will participate fully in Divisional research and educational activities. Protected time will be provided.
Applicants must hold an MD or equivalent with completed training in Cardiac Surgery and must be eligible for licensure in the Province of Alberta. The applicant must have obtained the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Fellowship in Cardiac Surgery or equivalent and have advanced training in Pediatric and Adult Congenital cardiac surgery.
Remuneration will be through a Fee for Service model.
