What is a Fellow of the CCS?
Election as a Fellow of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) recognizes your clinical, scientific and professional accomplishments and volunteer leadership and service.
What does “FCCS” stand for?
FCCS stands for Fellow of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society.
What will be the significance of these credentials to my peers?
The right to include the initials FCCS among your credentials lets your colleagues and patients know that you have met the high standards required for Fellowship designation in the national organization of cardiovascular professionals in Canada. This designation reflects not only the professional stature of the Fellow, but also his/her record of valuable service to the CCS and/or medical and scientific community.
Who is eligible to apply for FCCS?
To be eligible for consideration for FCCS, applicants must have been a CCS Regular or Life Member for at least (5) five consecutive years and must be members in good standing at the time of application. Fellowship is open to clinicians, scientists and clinician researchers with a major and productive interest in cardiovascular sciences.
Will certifications other than those specified in the eligibility criteria be considered by the review committee?
Clinicians applying for FCCS will generally possess a speciality or subspecialty certification in the cardiovascular field from the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada, or an equivalent certification, but other certifications such as Internal Medicine with majority of practice in cardiology, may be considered by the committee.
Scientists applying for FCCS will generally have a PhD or equivalent in a field relevant to cardiovascular sciences, but other certifications such as PharmD, may be considered by the review committee.
Clinician researchers applying for FCCS will generally possess a speciality or subspecialty certification in cardiovascular field with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or an equivalent certification, but other certifications may be considered by the review committee.
How do I demonstrate that I am recognized by my peers as a competent consultant in cardiovascular disease (clinicians), or a competent scientist or clinician researcher in cardiovascular sciences?
One of the FCCS application requirements is a nomination from a current Fellow of the CCS. This nomination from a trusted member and Fellow of the CCS will demonstrate that you are recognized by your peers as having made a significant contribution to the field of cardiovascular health and care in Canada.
How can volunteer service to the CCS or to the community be demonstrated?
Volunteer service to the CCS can be demonstrated through leadership and/or involvement at the CCS Council, CCS Committee or Working Group participation, Health Policy and Advocacy efforts, planning of educational programs, guideline development and peer review (Canadian Journal of Cardiology).
Volunteer service to the community can be demonstrated through leadership and/or involvement with the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Academy (CCSA), medical school, Canadian or Provincial medical association, local medical society, hospital administration or board, cardiovascular charity such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and cardiovascular peer review such as the Canadian Institutes for Health Research.
Who will complete the peer review process?
In the inaugural year (2015) of the Fellowship program, fellowship applications will be peer reviewed by a Committee consisting of: one past president, past Annual Achievement Award recipient and Chair of Membership Committee. In subsequent years they will be reviewed by a committee of FCCS members.
When will candidates be advised of the status of their application?
The names of candidates who meet the eligibility requirements will be presented to the CCS Council for approval at the June Council Meeting. Candidates will be advised of the status of their application via email by late June.
Are there annual dues associated with the fellowship?
Apart from the application fee (see on the form), there are no annual dues. However, Regular Members must continue to pay their annual dues. If dues remain unpaid, the member is no longer entitled to use the FCCS designation and their name will be removed from the list of Fellows on the web site; and after 2 years, members must reapply for Fellowship including the application fee.
