1. Driving: Coronary Heart Disease
Acute Coronary Syndromes
ST elevation MI
- Private driving is permitted beginning 1 month after discharge.
- Commercial driving is permitted beginning 3 months after discharge.
Non-ST elevation MI with significant LV damage*
- Private driving is permitted beginning 1 month after discharge.
- Commercial driving is permitted beginning 3 months after discharge.
Non-ST elevation MI with minor LV damage* (PCI perfomed)
- Private driving is permitted beginning 48 hours after PCI.
- Commercial driving is permitted beginning 7 days after PCI.
Non-ST elevation MI with minor LV damage* (PCI not perfomed)
- Private driving is permitted beginning 7 days after discharge.
- Commercial driving is permitted beginning 30 days after discharge.
Acute coronary syndrome without MI (unstable angina) (PCI perfomed)
- Private driving is permitted beginning 48 hours after PCI.
- Commercial driving is permitted beginning 7 days after PCI.
Acute coronary syndrome without MI (unstable angina) (PCI not perfomed)
- Private driving is permitted beginning 7 days after discharge.
- Commercial driving is permitted beginning 30 days after discharge.
*Minor left ventricle (LV) damage is classified as a myocardial infarction (MI) defined only by elevated troponin with or without electrocardiogram changes and in absence of a new wall motion abnormality. Significant LV damage is defined as any MI that is not classified as minor. Notwithstanding any of the foregoing recommendations, angiographic demonstration of 50% or greater reduction in the diameter of the left main coronary artery should disqualify the patient from commercial driving, and 70% or greater should disqualify the patient for private driving, unless treated with revascularization.
Stable Coronary Artery Disease
Stable Angina
- Private driving is permitted with no restriction.
- Commercial driving is permitted with no restriction.
Asymptomatic coronary artery disease
- Private driving is permitted with no restriction.
- Commercial driving is permitted with no restriction.
PCI
- Private driving is permitted beginning 48 hours after PCI.
- Commercial driving is permitted 48 hours after PCI.
Notwithstanding any of the foregoing recommendations, angiographic demonstration of 50% or greater reduction in the diameter of the left main coronary artery should disqualify the patient from commercial driving, and 70% or greater should disqualify the patient for private driving, unless treated with revascularization.
Cardiac Surgery for Coronary Artery Disease
CABG surgery
- Private driving is permitted beginning 1 month after discharge.
- Commercial driving is permitted beginning 3 months after discharge.
