QuickChart began as a conversation between myself and a former medical school classmate, Dr. Joel Moktar, an orthopaedic surgeon also practising in Ontario. We were both frustrated by how much time specialists lose to documentation.
Most available scribe tools weren’t built for specialty practices, and legacy transcription systems like Dragon were not automated enough to make a real difference. As a busy cardiac electrophysiologist, I often found myself staying hours after clinic just to finish charting.
Sound familiar? This is the unfortunate reality for many physicians across Canada. We know from the CMA Wellness Report that physicians spend, on average, 19 hours per week on paperwork. That’s time carved out of our evenings, weekends, and family life. And for many of us, it contributes directly to burnout. We all want to be fully present with our patients, yet documentation increasingly stands in the way.
Before medicine, I spent years as a software developer and EMR programmer, including with the OSCAR platform. I knew there had to be a better way to integrate AI into clinical workflows—so we built QuickChart. It serves as an ambient scribe that generates structured notes during the visit and allows clinicians to import data from photos, images, and PDFs directly into the chart. Since then, we’ve expanded the platform to include secure virtual care (phone and video) and an AI interviewer that collects patient history before the appointment.
QuickChart has changed my practice more than I expected. It saves me nearly two hours of documentation every day, allowing me to see three to four additional consults per clinic day. Those efficiencies helped us reduce our arrhythmia clinic wait list by approximately 50%. I finish on time now- no more piles of charts at the end of the day – andI can actually pick up my kids from daycare and make it home on time.
The biggest shift, however, is in how I feel about my clinic. I’m no longer typing while talking or breaking eye contact to capture details. QuickChart produces clear, consistent summaries, and I get to focus entirely on the patient. Instead of feeling like a documentation clerk, I feel like a doctor again.
QuickChart was built by clinicians for clinicians – to give us back our time, improve documentation quality, reduce wait lists, and make clinical care enjoyable again.
